FUNDING for voter education will be liberalised through the Electoral Amendment Bill that is awaiting President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s signature.
A clause in the Bill will repeal a provision that required all foreign contributions for voter education to be channelled through the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
“No foreign contribution or donation for the purposes of voter education shall be made except to the commission (ZEC), which may allocate such contribution or donation to any person,” reads the provision contained in section 40 of the Electoral Act.
The liberalisation comes after calls from some non-governmental organisations that government should allow participation of entities other than ZEC in voter education.
