Free funds anchor fuel supply

THE bulk of fuel imported into Zimbabwe during the first eight months of 2021 was funded by free funds, latest official statistics have shown.
Two decades of economic turmoil has created a foreign currency scarcity in the country, at times causing fuel shortages, and the latest episode ended last March when Direct Fuel Imports (DFI) were introduced.

According to data published by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency recently, DFI accounted for 63 percent of all the fuel imported into Zimbabwe between January and August this year, worth US$654 million. This was an increase from 53 percent between March and December last year.
