Econet gets additional spectrum

ZIMBABWE’S  largest mobile network operator Econet Wireless has been granted additional spectrum to expand its services.
This comes as the listed firm recently indicated that it will soon roll out fifth generation (5G) services across the country.
Industry analysts say emerging 5G networks feature lower latency, higher capacity, and increased bandwidth compared to 4G. These network improvements will have far-reaching impacts on how people live, work, and play all over the world.

In its trading update for the quarter to November 30, 2021, Econet said it commissioned 80 LTE (4G) new sites as part of its LTE densification programme, including extension of high speed data coverage to rural areas.

“This bears testimony to our vision of creating a digitally connected future that leaves no Zimbabwean behind. During the period under review, we received additional spectrum from the regulator, which will pave the way for us to introduce new services, bringing more convenience to our customers,” the company said.

Econet recorded a 43 percent increase in data traffic during the third quarter, while voice traffic grew by six percent compared to the previous year.
The group highlighted that bridging the digital divide and delivering a digital lifestyle through connectivity, gaming, and music streaming continued to be an important theme during the period.

It said persistent national grid power outages continued to adversely affect network availability.
“The business is accelerating installation of solar power solutions and saw increased usage of our already installed diesel-powered generators which are costlier to run and maintain,” Econet said. The group witnessed increased cases of vandalism and theft at its telecom tower sites, which it said is also creating service disruptions.
