Farmers fret as season looms

FARMERS are increasingly growing anxious ahead of the fast-approaching summer cropping season as preparations have been sent off the rails by inflation and currency volatility.
Both the Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) and the Zimbabwe Farmers Union (ZFU) say some farmers may even fail to participate in production totally, as costs escalate amid the negative effects of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

This comes after a 2021/2022 season, which farmers described as difficult, saw most of the small-scale sector that relies on rain-fed agriculture witnessing a drop in production, while this year’s winter wheat production has also been seriously affected.
