Potraz to expand 4G coverage

THE Posts and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (Potraz) says it wants to improve the 4G network coverage footprint in the country to around 87 percent and make it Zimbabwe’s baseline broadband technology.
This comes as Potraz also says that it is working on 22 sites across the country under the Universal Services Fund (USF) to establish network sharing base stations in areas underserved by mobile network operators, mainly for economic reasons.

Potraz director for technical services, Baxton Sirewu, said most of these areas were under 3G coverage.
“Currently, 4G covers mainly urban areas, resort towns and economically well-to-do areas but the intention is to have 4G as our baseline broadband technology. We are in engagement with operators to find the best ways to facilitate quicker roll-out of 4G,” Sirewu told The Financial Gazette in Kariba last week during the Zimbabwe Institute of Strategic Thinking annual conference.
