FARMERS are optimistic that they will get relief from measures introduced by both the government and private sector to combat theileriosis, more commonly referred to as January disease, which has ravaged the country’s livestock herds.
According to recent government estimates, the disease has killed over 500 000 cattle since 2015.
Experts attribute the high prevalence of the disease to inadequate or in some cases absent dipping regimes caused by the breakdown of the country’s dip tank system.
“The January disease is prevalent throughout the year. This has been caused by farmers neglecting to observe strict dipping regimes as they are prescribed by the veterinary department and extension workers that are on the ground to provide support.
