SUGAR producer Hippo Valley Estates says it is optimistic about sugar output in the upcoming season despite expectations of El Niño conditions.

It comes as the Tugwi-Mutirikwi and Manyuchi water systems have slightly more than three years of irrigation cover, which is adequate for 85 percent of the sugar industry requirements.
Hippo Valley chief executive, Aiden Mhere, told shareholders at the company’s recent annual meeting that the El Niño weather phenomenon is conducive to even higher crop growth, provided key inputs like fertilisers and water are available on time.
“However, with no additional inflows, the Mkwasine system will be constrained in the coming season in which case systematic water conservation measures will be implemented,” he said.
