Seed Co banks on small grains

SEED CO says the delayed rains in the 2023/24 agricultural season, which led to an increase in demand for small grains, hold a significant potential to claw back annual sales volume performance.
Zimbabwe experienced delayed rains in the 2023/24 agricultural season owing to the El Nino phenomenon which is also expected to result in low to below normal rainfall.
“From an operational perspective, the delayed rains this season led to increased demand for small grains and legumes, extending into the last quarter of the financial year in Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries,” Seed Co said in a trading update for the third quarter ended December 31, 2023.

In Zimbabwe, the total volume of seed sales witnessed a 28 percent decline during the quarter compared to the corresponding period in the preceding year, owing to the delayed rains and diminished enthusiasm for cropping due to the El Nino phenomenon.
