NEW energy firm Bulls Power Fuel has said demand for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in Zimbabwe is expected to increase in the next five years due to increased awareness, unreliable electricity supply and affordability.
Micheal Munhuwei, the group’s chief executive, made the remarks after the official launch of the Bulls Gas division last Friday, which he said would provide cleaner and efficient energy to the Zimbabwean market.
“We have envisaged increasing demand of LPG usage in this country due to lower cost, convenience and awareness of the product,” he said.
Advancements in LPG technology had also attracted new entrants to the industry.
The fate of LPG in Zimbabwe is highly dependent on plans government has moving forward as spread and frequency of use increases.
Government has, however, been engaging players to formulate policy that can help regulate the industry. For example, two years ago, one could import gas as long as they had a storage tank.
At present, one now needs storage tanks, 400 cylinders and compliance with fire department, local council planning, environment authority requrements to get an import or a trading licence.
Munhuwei said they are targeting to sell 200 000kg of LPG within the next 36 months.
The company also plans to venture into petrol and diesel distribution “soon” through another subsidiary, Bulls Petroleum.
“This is our first depot (in Sandton after Westgate Complex) of the many to come. We have five locations where we distribute our product to our customers. We also have strategic alliances with other gas distributors around the country and that has increased our footprint. Each site has a minimum capacity of 5000 litres,” he said.
