Indian firms eye Zim energy sector

INDIA’S ambassador to Zimbabwe, Vijay Khanduja, says companies from his country are eager to seize investment opportunities in Zimbabwe’s energy sector and help alleviate the country’s and southern Africa’s crippling power crisis.
Due to de-industrialisation, Zimbabwe now requires approximately 1 500 MW of electricity per day, down from 2 000 MW previously.
The country had been supplementing its electricity needs with imports from South African power utility Eskom and Mozambique’s Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa.

However, with destabilising deficits in South Africa and disturbances in Mozambique, the country resorted to importing power from Zambia. The power import deal with Zambia was short-lived as that country also began to face acute power shortages.
In emailed responses to The Financial Gazette, Khanduja this week said a number of companies have announced investment plans, while others are in the process of identifying locations for investment.
