LANDLINE phone and data services operator TelOne recently commissioned a US$1 million data centre expansion project at its Mazowe Earth Station. Tendo Electronics and Power Engineering Company, a wholly owned Zimbabwean company, was the service provider for the project. Our Senior Staff Writer, Farai Mabeza (FM), caught up with Tendo Electronics and Power Engineering Company managing director Mike Kamungeremu (MK) to speak about the company’s operations and the electronics market.
FM: Give us a background of the data centre business sector in the country?
MK: Every industry in this country has some footprint of data centres. The leading investors in data centres in Zimbabwe are mainly in the telecom and financial services sectors (banks and insurance). The investments are mainly driven by the volume of data they hold which requires safe repositories. We commissioned our first data centre in 2009 and since then we have designed and built over 40 of them.
FM: How does the market look at the moment?
MK: Most businesses significantly invested in digital infrastructure during the Covid-19 pandemic thereby increasing demand to upgrade, refresh or install new data centres to support this drive. The market is currently on an upward trajectory and we expect it to continue as the country slowly moves to Industry 4.0.
