AGRICULTURE minister Anxious Masuka says the government is introducing infrastructure, finance and market support for smallholder horticulture under the Presidential Rural Development Programme.
This comes after the launch of the programme by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Mangwe, Matabeleland South Province, last December.
Speaking at the commencement of the programme in Mashonaland West last week, Masuka said that the government through the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) would drill and equip a total of 35 000 boreholes by 2025.
“This means a borehole in each of the 35 000 villages across Zimbabwe. These solar powered boreholes will then open the way for the local communities to establish horticulture gardens, drip irrigation, growing high value crops, fisheries, piped water scheme together with washing slabs and cattle troughs,” Masuka said.
