Farmers drive up hope of recovery

ZIMBABWE’s record tobacco haul this year is helping to drive up guarded optimism about the recovery of the country’s key agriculture sector and the wider economy.
This comes after the country produced a record wheat harvest last winter, with another bumper yield of the cereal grain also expected this season.
At the same time, the country’s latest crop assessments indicate that production of the vital maize staple this year will be 58 percent higher than last season’s output — at 2 298 281 metric tonnes.

Industry experts who spoke to The Financial Gazette this week said the country was well on its way to achieving its biggest-ever tobacco haul, with this year’s output set to comfortably surpass the record volume of 259 million kg, which was achieved in 2019.
Although the revised target for 2023 stands at 270 million kg, there is optimism that the 300 million kg annual production target is in fact within sight.
