ZIMBABWE’S diesel consumption saw a four percent increase in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, according to latest data released by the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera).
Diesel consumption reached 528,99 million litres, up from 510,22 million litres in the prior year.
The month of June 2024 alone witnessed a 10 percent increase, with 93,58 million litres consumed compared to 84,71 million litres in June 2023.
Zera attributes this rise to preparations for the 7th Annual SADC Industrialisation Week and the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State, both held in Harare.
The increased reliance on diesel-powered generators due to power cuts has also contributed to the higher consumption, despite the added cost burden of high fuel prices.
